The history of Plaza del Príncipe dates back to the 19th century. At that time it belonged to the convent of San Francisco Alcántara, where the Franciscans had an orchard where they grew vegetables, legumes and fruit, using the water from the Guaire ravine that ran along what is now Ruiz de Padrón street. At the beginning of the 1800s, the convent and the orchard passed into public ownership and later into private hands. It was the mayor, Bernabé Rodríguez, who in 1858 reached an agreement with the owner of the land, Gabriel Pérez, who lived in Cádiz. With money from the Town Hall and private donations, the site was designed and completed. It was named after the birth of the Prince of Asturias, Alfonso XII, which coincided with the date on which work began. The town's architect, Manuel Oráa y Alcorcha, was responsible for the design of the square and the adjacent streets. Curiously, prisoners and soldiers were employed to complete the work. It was inaugurated in 1860. The laurels of the Indies came from Cuba, and it is worth mentioning the two Carrara marble statues at the main entrance, representing Spring and Summer. Years later, the town council bought the vases that decorate the perimeter of the square, also in Carrara marble, in Italy. In the place where the music pavilion now stands, there used to be a fountain. The iron lanterns and benches are part of the history of the square. More recently, several statues have been placed here. One by the sculptor Hanneke Beaumont and, in 2014, a sculpture in honour of the founder of Ni fú-Ni fá, Enrique González.
